Faces of NLU: Meet Zosima Jimenez

An undergraduate psychology student expands her social horizons and finds a diverse community of peers at NLU.

Going to college is about more than just passing classes and earning a degree. It’s a time to expand your horizons, challenge yourself, and meet new people. That’s why National Louis University (NLU) students have various opportunities to get involved on campus through clubs, organizations, Greek life, and more. Zosima Jimenez, a junior Psychology major from Chicago, explains that the social growth she’s undergone at NLU has been just as important as the academic growth:

“National Louis cracked me out of my shell. It has helped me connect with new people and encouraged me to stay motivated with the academic and social side of myself.”

One of the ways Zosima has connected with fellow students is through her sorority:

“I am involved in a Greek organization that is just starting out. We are called the Cygnets Official Interest Group of Gamma Phi Omega Sorority Incorporated at National Louis University. Together our goals are to achieve Academic Excellence, commit Community Service, spread Cultural Awareness, and establish a great Sisterhood. Because of this organization I have been more involved on campus and got to meet amazing new people.”

Zosima says the diverse student body of NLU, along with the University’s diversity focus, is what drew her to NLU in the first place:

“I decided to come to NLU because of the diversity that this university promotes and encourages. I felt immediately welcomed and I knew that this school had a lot to offer – just as much as I had to offer to it.”

Zosima has been able to find a community of peers at NLU even during the pandemic. However, she admits that earning her degree during Covid-19 was challenging:

“I remained focused in school despite taking it upon myself to care for my father, who was infected with the coronavirus. I was distraught physically, mentally and emotionally, but I knew that no matter what I had to keep going.”

Zosima maintains that being an active student in her online classes helped her persevere through tough times:

“Regardless of the fatigue I felt, I was always logged in and ready to participate in any way I could. Leaving school was never an option I wanted to take.”

She also credits the NLU staff for helping her succeed:

“I have never seen an environment so full of resources, with students and staff so willing to help anyone who steps foot on their establishment [...] NLU has helped me believe in myself and my ability to pursue my dream career.”

Zosima is set to graduate with her bachelor’s degree next year, and after that, she’s eager to pursue a career that will help her give back:

“I see myself [...] helping my community by pursuing my career in social work, providing for my family, and continuing to grow within myself.”

She reminds her fellow NLU students that achieving their dreams will never be easy, but it will lead to great things:

“Never underestimate the amount of work that is needed to make your dream come true. I personally underestimated the amount of work I thought would be necessary for something and I failed. Since then, I learned to work to my fullest potential and never underestimate the difficulty of challenges that come my way.”
