About the M.Ed. in Higher Education

Become a Higher Education Student Affairs leader who will be prepared to meet the changing needs of an increasingly diverse student population. Understand the complexities of today's students and academic environments in both on-campus and online settings.

NLU's M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs provides students with a pathway to student affairs and administrative careers in higher education institutions. This program is focused on student-centered, mission-driven work and challenges students to become critical scholar-practitioners. Throughout the program students engage with different voices and perspectives, and approach issues through problem-based learning.

The M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs is a practitioner graduate program that prepares professionals to:

  • Analyze the impact of higher education policy, student demographics, and institutional characteristics on student success, retention, and academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use theory and data to identify trends, needs, and gaps in student affairs programs and services, and across higher education.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of student affairs programs and services in promoting student engagement, academic success, and personal development.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of ethical and legal issues that impact higher education, such as student privacy, free speech, and academic freedom.
  • Develop effective leadership skills in managing and supervising staff, budgeting and financial management, and strategic planning for higher education institutions and student affairs departments.
