Apply - Complete the FAFSA

In order to receive student financial aid, students are required to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every school year. We encourage students to complete the FAFSA online. When applying for financial aid, we ask that you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at least one month before your last class ends for the term in which you are seeking financial aid. This gives us adequate time to process your application.

First-Time Applicants

  • National Louis University school code is 001733; we are only listed with our Chicago IL campus address. Please choose this option regardless of which campus you will be attending.

  • An FSA ID is required to submit the FAFSA application; to request one, go to https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch. The same FSA ID can then be used to access and sign your Renewal FAFSA application next school year.
  • If you are a dependent student, your parent will also have to sign. Only one parent needs to sign the application. Your parent(s) may apply for an FSA ID at the FSA ID site in order to electronically sign your application, or they can sign a paper signature page.

Returning FAFSA Applicants

  • National Louis University school code is 001733; we are only listed with our Chicago IL campus address. Please choose this option regardless of which campus you will be attending.

  • You will need an FSA ID to sign the application electronically. If you have forgotten your FSA ID, you can request a duplicate by going to studentaid.gov and selecting the option "Manage My FSA ID". From the FSA ID web site, you can create an FSA ID by selecting the option "Create an FSA ID".

  • Remember, your FSA ID gives you access to your personal information on the Web and also allows you to sign student aid documents electronically. To protect the confidentiality of your application data, you should never share your FSA ID with anyone, even if that person is helping you to complete your Renewal FAFSA on the Web.

Many students are finished with the application process once the FAFSA is submitted. The Department of Education (ED) selects approximately one third of all applicants for a process called verification and occasionally flags a student for review of name, citizenship or income. The results we receive from ED will let us know if you are required to submit any supplemental information or documentation. We will send you a detailed letter explaining any additional requirements. You will work directly with our staff, not the ED, to supply the required documents and resolve any outstanding issues.

Please keep in mind that it may take up to 2 weeks for our office to receive your electronic results from the Department of Education. To ensure that financial aid is processed in a timely manner, NLU recommends that FAFSA results are received at least 30 days before the term start date.

If you need assistance completing the FAFSA or have any other questions/concerns, please call us at 888-658-8632, option 3 or email studentfinance@nl.edu.

Announcements

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE ILLNOIS STUDENT ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REGARDING THE IL MAP GRANT FOR FINANCIAL AID FOR UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS:
On July 24, 2026, a federal district court ruled that undocumented students are no longer eligible to receive financial assistance from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) for the 2026-2027 school year. The court’s ruling is the result of the Trump Administration suing the State of Illinois to deny college access to undocumented students who have graduated from Illinois high schools. We know this court decision brings tremendous uncertainty and financial challenges for Illinois undocumented students. This is a developing situation as the state explores options and students and families should check back for updates from ISAC as they become available.
