Managing Quiz Availability and Settings
Step 1: Understanding Quiz Availability Dates
Types of Availability Dates
- Start Date -- Determines when students can access the quiz. Before the Start Date, students may see the quiz (unless hidden) but cannot begin it.
- Due Date -- The instructor-specified deadline for submitting a quiz. Submissions after this date (up until the End Date) are marked late.
- End Date -- Restricts when a quiz can be started. Once the End Date passes, students can no longer begin the quiz.
- Note: On non-synchronous quizzes, students who start before the End Date can continue past it if time allows.
Step 2: Modifying Availability Dates
- Select the Quiz Name from the Quizzes tool.
- Set a Due Date: Click the Due Date text box and select a date/time.
- Go to the Availability Dates & Conditions Tab:
- Set a Start Date and End Date by entering or selecting the date/time.
- Click Add Release Condition to restrict access based on specific criteria.
- Click Manage Special Access to provide extended time or date exemptions for certain students.
- Click Save and Close.
- Note: If a quiz is linked in a content module, Due Dates can also be set in the Content Tool.
Step 3: Setting a Time Limit and Late Submission Options
- Select the Quiz Name.
- Go to the Timing & Display Tab.
- Enable "Set Time Limit."
- Enter the number of minutes students have to complete the quiz.
- Adjust Timer Settings:

- Do Nothing: No enforcement; students may continue past the time limit.
- Click Save and Close.

- Go to the Attempts & Completion Tab.

- Choose the number of attempts allowed.
- Select an Overall Grade Calculation (default is Highest Attempt).
