Managing Quiz Availability and Settings

Step 1: Understanding Quiz Availability Dates

Types of Availability Dates

  1. Start Date -- Determines when students can access the quiz. Before the Start Date, students may see the quiz (unless hidden) but cannot begin it.
  2. Due Date -- The instructor-specified deadline for submitting a quiz. Submissions after this date (up until the End Date) are marked late.
  3. End Date -- Restricts when a quiz can be started. Once the End Date passes, students can no longer begin the quiz.
    • Note: On non-synchronous quizzes, students who start before the End Date can continue past it if time allows.

Step 2: Modifying Availability Dates

  1. Select the Quiz Name from the Quizzes tool.
  2. Set a Due Date: Click the Due Date text box and select a date/time.
  3. Go to the Availability Dates & Conditions Tab:
    • Set a Start Date and End Date by entering or selecting the date/time.
    • Click Add Release Condition to restrict access based on specific criteria.
    • Click Manage Special Access to provide extended time or date exemptions for certain students.
  4. Click Save and Close.
    • Note: If a quiz is linked in a content module, Due Dates can also be set in the Content Tool.

Step 3: Setting a Time Limit and Late Submission Options

  1. Select the Quiz Name.
  2. Go to the Timing & Display Tab.
  3. Enable "Set Time Limit."
    • Enter the number of minutes students have to complete the quiz.
  4. Adjust Timer Settings:
    • Automatically Submit (Default): Ends and submits the quiz when time expires.
    • Flag Exceeded Time & Allow Work: Marks the quiz as exceeding time but lets students continue.
    • Do Nothing: No enforcement; students may continue past the time limit.
  5. Click Save and Close.

Step 4: Setting Up a Synchronous Quiz

What is a Synchronous Quiz?

  • A synchronous quiz starts its timer at the specified Start Date regardless of when a student begins.
  • The Start Date does not appear in the Course Calendar, Work to Do widget, or Pulse app.

Steps to Set Up a Synchronous Quiz

  1. Select the Quiz Name.
  2. Go to the Availability Dates & Conditions Tab.
    • Set the Start Date for when the quiz timer will begin.
  3. Go to the Timing & Display Tab.
    • Enable Set Time Limit and enter the duration in minutes.
  4. Select Timer Settings.
    • Choose Synchronous: Timer starts on the Start Date.
  5. Click OK, then Save and Close.

Step 5: Linking a Synchronous Quiz to Content

Why Link?

  • Synchronous quizzes do not appear in the Course Calendar, so linking them in Content ensures visibility.
  1. Navigate to Content.
  2. Select the Module where the quiz should be placed.
  3. Click Add Existing Activity > Quizzes.
  4. Select the Quiz from the list.
  5. Edit Properties In-Place:
    • Click the downward arrow next to the quiz.
    • Select Add Dates and Descriptions.
    • Enter the Due Date (should match the Start Date for visibility in the calendar).
  6. Click Update.

Step 6: Adjusting Quiz Attempt Settings

By default, students have one attempt per quiz. Instructors can allow multiple attempts and control how quiz scores are calculated.

  1. Select the Quiz Name.
  2. Go to the Attempts & Completion Tab.
  3. Click Manage Attempts.
    • Choose the number of attempts allowed.
    • Select an Overall Grade Calculation (default is Highest Attempt).
  4. (Optional) Retake Incorrect Questions Only:
    • Check this box to allow students to only retry incorrectly answered questions on subsequent attempts.
  5. Click OK, then Save and Close.

Step 7: Configuring Quiz Feedback and Visibility Settings

By default, students do not see feedback or correct answers after submission. Instructors can adjust what is displayed.

  1. Select the Quiz Name.
  2. Go to the Evaluation & Feedback Tab.
  3. Adjust What Students See After Submission:
    • Select a display option (e.g., Attempt Score, Correct/Incorrect Answers, Instructor Feedback).
    • Click Customize Quiz Results Displays for more options.
  4. Adding Additional Views:
    • Click Add Additional View to show feedback after a specific date/time.
    • (Optional) Limit how long students can view answers after submission.
  5. Click Save and Close.
